He:/She: –SIGNED

Photography by Robert Heinecken
First Edition, First Printing

A Chicago Book, Chicago, Illinois, 1980

SIGNED by the Artist

Robert Heinecken's work has been considered controversial from the time he began creating it, largely due to the inclusion of pornographic imagery. Like Richard Prince, he also used advertising images to make a point about our consumer culture and the presentation of art. "He:/She:" presents an imagined dialogue between a man and a woman, written out on index cards below printed versions of SX-70 Polaroid prints. (The original edition featured original SX-70s.)

From The New York Times:
"In the 'He/She' pieces the sexual content is mostly implied by the text, since only a few of the Polaroid prints are sexually explicit. 'He' and 'She' characters talk somewhat disjointedly about such matters as kissing and going to bed, but the main thrust of the dialogues is to explore what Heinecken has called 'relational possibilities.' The pictures, which often have little to do in any obvious way with the dialogue they frame, seem simply to offer a visual set of relational possibilities that interact with those of the text."

VERY FINE, SIGNED by the Artist. VERY SCARCE FIRST EDITION. On spiral-bound ruled index cards. "He:/She:" is a spiral-bound, softcover book, measuring 5.25 x 8 inches and containing numerous color reproductions on facsimile index card pages. The title page verso reads: "These writings began in 1974 and since that date have been exhibited as collage elements in art galleries and portfolios." Top Choice Books offers a SIGNED copy of He:/She: in VERY FINE condition; this is an extremely rare item and will not last long in our stock.
