Edwardian Men by James Spada
Published by Pond Street Press, MA, First Edition, October 2004. “Edwardian Men” is James Spada’s second male photography title, although he has published over twenty “celebrity portrait” works. Following the success of “Black & White Men”, which was nominated for a Lambda Literary Award as the best visual arts book of 2000, Spada has produced another excellent photographic work with this release.

From the Inside Flap (edited)
With the breathtaking images in this book, accompanied by lyrical passages from Shakespeare’s Sonnets, photographer James Spada transports some of today’s most delectable young men back to a time that should have been. Here we have frank poses from men of all types, sizes, and races, surrounded by the beauty and decorativeness of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Art critic Shawn Hill wrote of these photographs in Boston’s Bay Windows, "Spada explores interior and private spheres. His evocative images, however, are almost timeless, and exciting in their immodesty. One imagines these young gentlemen—sprawling on overstuffed beds, gazing longingly (Narcissus-like) at themselves in ornate Victorian mirrors, posing so artfully against elaborate wooden headboards—are more used to stiff shirts, starched ties, and a very regimented public world. Like the women of this era, the men of the 19th century had strict moral codes to follow. Here Spada lets us imagine that at least some of them dreamed of a freer, more indulgent world."
This VASTLY OVERLOOKED “padded” Hardcover book is offered in AS NEW condition. The book’s dimensions are 10.5 inches by 8.25 inches, and there are 96 pages.
