“punk Picasso” is unmistakably a Larry Clark production. It has all the elements of raw drama as seen in his previous works (Kids, Tulsa, Teenage Lust, etc.). But it differs in that there is a large autobiographical element, which permeates this artist book.
Produced by AKA Editions, but distributed through the Roth/Horowitz Gallery, this LIMITED EDITION is only 1,000 copies worldwide. The book is signed on the last page in green ink “Larry Clark, 2003”.
The autobiographical material in punk Picasso collectively documents both the personal story, and the artistic projects undertaken by Larry Clark. Unique photographs, letters and stories both from Clark’s art and film career graphically depict the life of one of the most controversial and highly influential figures in contemporary culture. This book can sometimes be hard to view based on the subject matter. But this is exactly the point of the book as life viewed by Larry Clark.

Larry Clark’s opus "punk Picasso", whose title references David Denby’s review of 'Bully' - “ as the camera wanders- grazes among naked thighs and tattooed torsos, this punk Picasso combines the multiple desires of lover, artist and voyeur ” - displays in scrapbook format a loose chronological overview of the celebrated artist’s provocative career. The material presented ranges from family snapshots (his American Indian great grandfather, his father playing golf, a portrait of his mother as a professional photographer with Rollei and flash in hand, Clark with his son’s soccer team); unpublished images from “Tulsa” and “42nd St.”; photographs from the set of his first film “Kids” and his new film “Ken Park”; clippings from reviews of exhibitions and films; correspondence; transcribed stories; Roger Maris ephemera; portraits of skateboarders; River Phoenix (images appropriated from Teen Magazines); Clark’s lover Tiffany and their dog Snappy; Page Six from the New York Post headlining: Larry Clark stands up for U.S.; and reproductions of phonograph records that act as soundtrack to the visual narrative. “punk Picasso” gathers together scraps of evidence that chart the life of the artist and his creations, which in Clark’s case, are inseparably entwined.
This soft cover slipcase book has 496 pages with duotone and color images. The covers are illustrated laminated stiff wrapper, which measure 8.5 x 11 inches. This title is OUT-OF-PRINT and is offered in PRISTINE condition as it was purchased directly from the Gallery.

International purchases are welcome. I will ONLY ship by USPS Express/Priority Service, which have online tracking and some insurance, however, the shipment will be fully insured. Buyer is responsible for any import taxes or duty associated with this purchase. There is no warranty for international shipments once the package leaves the United States. Insurance is therefore required.
